With so many new digital channels opening up for restaurant ordering, many restauranteurs and industry experts have expressed concerns about what impact these new channels may have on in-restaurant business. And, while their concerns are understandable, various studies are showing that rather than stealing away in-house business, the increase in digital platforms for take-out business is simply opening up another opportunity for revenue, and potentially a new set of customers who never visit restaurants.
According to a recent Nation’s Restaurant News article discussing a study done by Sense360, the increased use of and/or adoption of delivery apps does not cause a significant decrease in in-restaurant visits, at least not in the short term. For the study, Sense360 tracked more than 21 million restaurant visits to identify any changes in consumer behavior before downloading a delivery app and after doing so, NRN writes. The study focused on consumer behavior 90 days before downloading a third-party app, like UberEats, and 90 days after, and the results showed no impact.
Summarizing the report, NRN notes that changes in consumer behavior could become more evident over a longer period of time and that Sense360 plans to analyze the long-term effects as well. For now, the study provides insights about the value of using third-party delivery apps to open up business with a whole new group of consumers, NRN writes.
As noted in the article, opening up new ordering channels allows for restaurants to target people who may have never been big on in-restaurant visits anyway.
